- The royal piece. It stays inside the palace.

- A one-step diagonal palace defender.
- ElephantBishop · 象 / 相xiàng
- A two-point diagonal piece that cannot cross the river.
- HorseKnight · 馬 / 傌mǎ
- Moves like a knight, but its first straight step can be blocked.

- The board’s long-range straight-line piece.
